Nimalung & Kurjey Tshechu Festival (14th - 16th June 2024)

Nimalung & Kurjey Tshechu festivals 2024 will be held at the Nimalung and Kurjey monasteries in Bumthang. This 3 day festival is an annual event and starts with the mask and folk dances. The main event is on the last day where they display of Guru Tshengye Thongdrol (Huge tapestry / Thanka) in the morning and people get blessed. On final day of the festival, people also get the opportunity to witness Guru Tshengye cham. The Drametse Nga Cham performed by the monks of Nimalung monastery.

Day 1.Arrive Paro and sightseeing | Altitude: 2280 m.

Meet and greet at the airport and drive to the Hotel.

After lunch, visit to:

Day 2.Paro – Bumthang sightseeing | By Flight – 25 minutes | Altitude: 2600 m.

In the morning, drive to the airport for flight to Bumthang.

Meet & greet at the airport and drive to the Hotel.

In the afternoon, visit to:

  • Jakar dzong literally means “The castle of white bird” built in 1667 by the Tibetan Lama Nagi Wangchuk.
  • Jambay lhakhang built in 659 AD by the Tibetan king, Srongtsen Gampo. One of the oldest annual festival in Bhutan, Jambay lhakhang Drup is held here in late october.
  • Tamshing lhakhang which means “the Temple of the good message”, established in 1501 by Pema Lingpa.
  • Kurjey lhakhang built in the 8th century where you can see the body print of the Guru Rinpoche

Day 3.Bumthang – Witness Nimalung tshechu festival 2024:

In the morning, drive to witness the Nimalung tshechu festival 2024 (Full day).

On the way back, visit to:

  • The “Mebar Tsho” or the burning lake where Pema Lingpa discovered the treasures hidden by Guru Rinpoche. If the time permits, visit Ura temple where the famous annual Ura Yakchoe festival is held in the spring.

Day 4.Bumthang – Witness the Nimalung Tshechu Festival 2024:

Witness the Nimalung / Kurjey tshechu festival 2024.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town.

Day 5.Bumthang – Trongsa – Gangtey | Altitude: 3000 m | 185 Km | Drive: 5 hours.

In the morning, drive to the beautiful valley of Phobjikha. On the way, visit to:

  • Trongsa dzong built in 1644 by Chhogyal Minjur Tempa. The dzong was strategically built by the ancient rulers to control the trade between eastern and western Bhutan.
  • Ta dzong is an ancient watch tower which once guarded the Trongsa dzong.

After lunch, drive further to Phobjikha valley. While in Phobjikha, visit to:

Gangtey Gompa monastery founded in 1613 by Gyaltse Pema Thinley, the mind reincarnation of Pema Lingpa.

Explore the beautiful Phobjikha valley at an elevation of 3000 m.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 6.Phobjikha – Punakha sightseeing | Altitude: 1242 m |75 Km | Drive: 2 hours.

In the morning, visit to the crane information center. Then drive to Punakha valley and visit to:

  • Wangdue Phodrang dzong built in 1638 by Shabdrung Rinpoche.
  • Chimi lhakhang built in 15th century to honor Lama Drukpa Kuenley also popularly known as “The Devine Madman”. This temple is also called ” The temple of fertility”.

In the afternoon, visit Punakha dzong was built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. The grand annual Punakha tshechu festival is held here in early spring.

In the evening, hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Choling monastery. It was built by Her Majesty the Queen Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck. The temple houses paintings that belong to the Nyingmapa traditions.

Day 7.Punakha – Thimphu sightseeing | Altitude: 2334 m |76 Km | Drive: 2 hours.

In the morning, walk across the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan (160 m).

  • Visit the Dochu La pass (3140 m) with 108 stupas. Enjoy the great views of the higher Himalayas bordering Tibet. You can see Table mountain, Mt. Masagang (7158 m), the highest mountain in Bhutan.

After lunch at Dochu La cafeteriadrive further to Thimphu valley.

  • Witness archery match at Changlimithang stadium.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Day 8.Thimphu sightseeing | Altitude: 2334 m.

In the morning, visit to:

  • National memorial chorten built in 1974 by Her Majesty the Queen Mother Kesang Choden Wangchuck.

  • Changangkha lhakhang, the oldest temple in Thimphu valley built in the 13th century by Phajo Drugom Shigpo.
  • Takin preserve center.
  • Sangaygang view point.
  • Dupthop lhakhang, one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.

In the afternoon, visit to:

  • Simply Bhutan museum where you can enjoy local wine and also witness cultural show.
  • Handicraft bazaar where you can buy Bhutanese handicrafts and art works.
  • Tashichho dzong, the summer residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief abbot of Bhutan).

Day 9.Thimphu – Paro sightseeing | Altitude: 2280 m | 56 Km | Drive: 1 hour.

In the morning, visit Bhutan postal museum, textile museum and painting school (The school of 13 arts and crafts).

In the afternoon, drive to Paro. On the way, visit Tamchog lhakhang built in the 15th century by Thang Tong Gyalpo.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Day 10.Paro Sightseeing – Hike to the Tiger’s nest monastery (Taktsang) | 7 Km | Hike: 4 hours.

In the morning, hike the beautiful Tiger’s nest monastery (Paro Taktsang).

In the afternoon, visit Drugyel dzong built in 1647 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
