Day 1.Arrive Paro and sightseeing | Altitude: 2280 m.

Your guide will receive you at the airport and then drive to the hotel.

Afternoon, visit to:

In the evening, explore Paro town.

Dinner and over night in Hotel.

Day 2.Hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang):

Morning – Hike to the Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), the most photographed monument in Paro valley.

Afternoon – Visit Drugyel Dzong built in 1647 by the great Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

Then visit Kyichu Lhakhang built in 659 A.D by the Tibetan King Srongtsen Gampo.

In the evening, drive to Shana (22 km. 2 hour drive).

Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 3.Shana – Thangthangka (Start of Bhutan Jomolhari Trek Itinerary):

The route follows the river through a forest area. We cross a junction on the way, where another path leads north to Tremo La Pass and then to Tibet. Camp is in a meadow with a stone shelter.

Distance 22 Km, Time 7 – 8 hours, Altitude: 3610 m, 770 m ascent, 10 m descent.

Dinner and overnight in camp.

Day 4.Thangthangka – Jangothang:

Walk past a small army post, the trail passes Tegethang, the Yak herders’ camp. You can see Yaks as we arrive at the Jomolhari base camp (4,115 m). There is a ruined fortress nearby that used to guard Bhutan against Tibetan invasions.

Distance 19 Km; Time 5 – 6 hours, 480 m ascent, Altitude 4080 m.

Dinner and over night in Camp.

Day 5.Jangothang Halt (Acclimatization for Jomolhari Trek in Bhutan):

Acclimatization for Jomolhari Trek in Bhutan at Jangothang. Enjoy the beautiful views all around.

You have 3 options on this day:

  1. Hike to Jichu Drake Glacier which is around 3 hours (Back and Forth).
  2. Walk up the mountain between Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, the summit (5200 m) with a great view of both the mountains. This is 8 hours (Back and forth).
  3. Hike to Jomolhari Glacier which is around 4 ½ hours (Back and forth).

Dinner and overnight in camp.

Day 6.Jangothang – Lingshi:

Walk across the bridge and start the climb up the ridge to view Jichu Drake, Tserimgang and Jomolhari. We cross the Nyeley La Pass at an altitude of 4,700 m. Then descend down to the Lingshi camp.  Enjoy the scenic view of the mountains and the Lingshi Dzong. Camp altitude is 4010 m.

Distance: 18 km, Walking time: 6-7 hours, Ascent 840 m, Descent: 870 m. Jomolhari trek Difficulty level: Strenuous.

Dinner and overnight in camp.

Day 7.Lingshi – Shodu:

The trail crosses Yali La Pass (4930 m – Highest Jomolhari Trek Altitude). You can see beautiful views of Tserimgang, Masagang and Mount Jomolhari, Tserimgang.

Camp at Shodu: 4080 m. Today Jomolhari trek difficulty is most strenuous. Distance: 22 km, 8-9 hours walk. (Ascent 940 m, Descent 920 m).

Dinner and overnight in Camp.

Day 8.Shodu – Barshong:

The trail follows the Wang Chu River, passing through Juniper and Rhododendron forest. The trail then is gradually uphill till the ruins of the Barshong dzong, reaching the camp.

Distance: 16 km. walking time 5-6 hours, Ascent 250 m, Descent: 670 m. Camp at Altitude: 3710 m.

Dinner and over night in camp.

Day 9.Barshong – Dolam Kencho:

The Trail descends through Pine and Rhododendron forest and again joins the Wang Chu River. Then the final climb up to Dolam Kencho camp.

Camp at altitude 3320 m. 15 km. walking time 4-6 hours, Ascent 290 m, Descent 640 m.

Day 10.Dolam Kencho – Dodena (End of Bhutan Jomolhari Trek Itinerary) – Thimphu:

The trail passes through bamboo forests finally joining Wang Chu River. We reach Dodena where your vehicle will be picked up and drive to Thimphu (End of Bhutan Jomolhari Trek Itinerary).

Distance 8 km, 4 hours walk. Ascent 500 m, Descent 930 m.

Afternoon – Rest in the hotel.

In the evening, free to stroll in the town.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 11.Thimphu sightseeing | Altitude: 2334 m.

Morning sightseeing includes:

  • National Memorial Chorten (1974) built in honor of the Late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.
  • Dupthop Lhakhang one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.
  • National Library, stocked with ancient Buddhist manuscripts.
  • Painting School where traditional art is still kept alive through instructions in the art of painting Thangkas.

Afternoon, visit to:

  • Tallest Statue of Buddha in the world (51.5 m).
  • Witness Archery Match at Changlimithang.

In the evening, visit Tashichho Dzong, seat of the national government and the Central Monastic Body.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 12.Thimphu – Punakha – Thimphu | 76 Km | Drive: 3 hours.

Morning – Drive to Punakha valley via Dochu La pass (3140 m). A short stop at the Dochu La pass to view Higher Himalayas.

Drive further to Punakha. On the way, visit to:

  • Chimi Lhakhang built in 1499 by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, popularly known as “The Divine Madman”. The Temple is also known as “the Temple of Fertility”.

Afternoon, visit to Punakha Dzong built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

In the evening, drive back to Thimphu.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 13.Thimphu – Paro (Departure):

After breakfast, drive to the airport and farewell.

Is backpacking allowed on Jomolhari Trek in Bhutan?

Backpacking is absolutely not allowed on Jomolhari trek in Bhutan. Also the regional tourists from India, Bangladesh and other neighboring countries are not allowed. All trekkers have to book a package trekking trip with a local Bhutanese Tour Operator who will process and obtain the necessary permits for this trek.

Jomolhari Trek in Bhutan is for 8 days if you start from Shana in Paro and halt for a night at Jangothang. We have made it mandatory to halt for a night at Jangothang for acclimatization as trails beyond Jangothang passes through high altitudes above 4200 m. However if you start the trek from Drugyel Dzong, then the trek is for 9 days. The distance covered on Jomolhari trek in Bhutan is 138 km if you start from Drugyel Dzong. Drugyel Dzong to Shana is 22 Kms.
