The Jomolhari Base Camp Trek is very popular trek route, passing through Jangothang and the base of Mt. Jomolhari. This trek in Bhutan starts and ends at Shana and passes through high passes and the Yak Herders’ camp. The Trekkers can see some of the most spectacular views of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake and Dagala. You will also have the opportunity to see Blue sheep and other wild life in these areas. Trek distance is 96 Km and the highest point is 4930 meters.

Jomolhari Base Camp Trek Itinerary - Detailed:

Day 1.Arrive Paro and sightseeing | 2280 m.

Your guide will receive you at the Paro International airport and then drive to the hotel.

In the Afternoon, visit Ta Dzong, an ancient watchtower built in 1656 which now houses the National Museum.

Then visit Paro Rinpung Dzong built in 1646 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

In the evening, visit a Typical Bhutanese Farm house.

Dinner and over night in Hotel.

Day 2.Hike to Taktsang Monastery (Tiger’s Nest) | 7 Km | Hike: 4 hours.

In the morning, hike to the spectacular Tiger’s Nest monastery (Paro Taktsang). This trail is also a part of the beautiful 2 days Bumdra trek in Paro valley.

In the Afternoon, visit Drugyel Dzong built in 1647 by the great Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

Then visit Kyichu Lhakhang built in 659 A.D by the Tibetan King Srongtsen Gampo.

In the evening, drive to Shana (22 km. 2 hour drive).

Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 3.Shana – Thangthangka (Start of Jomolhari Base Camp Trek):

The route follows the river through a forest area. We cross a junction on the way, where another path leads north to Tremo La Pass and then to Tibet. Camp is in a meadow with a stone shelter.

Distance 22 Km, Time 7 – 8 hours, Altitude: 3610 m, 770 m ascent, 10 m descent.

Dinner and overnight in camp.

Day 4.Thang Thangka – Jangothang.

Walk past a small army post, the trail passes Tegethang, the Yak herders’ camp. You can see Yaks as we arrive at the Jomolhari base camp (4,115 m). There is a ruined fortress nearby that used to guard Bhutan against Tibetan invasions.

Distance 19 Km; Time 5 – 6 hours, 480 m ascent, Altitude 4080 m.

Dinner and over night in Camp.

Day 5.Halt at Jangothang.

Acclimatization at Jangothang. Enjoy the beautiful views all around.

You have 3 options on today:

  1. Walk up the mountain between Jomolhari and Jichu Drake, the summit (5200 m) with a great view of both the mountains. This is 8 hours (Back and forth).
  2. Hike to Jichu Drake Glacier which is around 3 hours (Back and Forth).
  3. Hike to Jomolhari Glacier which is around 4 ½ hours (Back and forth).

Dinner and overnight in camp.

Day 6.Jangothang – Dhumzo (Soi Yaktsa) at 3800 m via Bonte La pass 4900 m.

Today we walk 16 km and it will take approximately 8 hours to reach the Dhumzo Camp site. On the way, enjoy the view of Jomolhari, Jichu Drake and the valley to Jomolhari camp site. You may also come across Blue sheep.

Distance – 16 Km, Duration 7 – 8 hours walk, Level of Difficulty: Moderately hard. Highest Point: 4900 m,

Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day 7.Dhumzo (Soi Yaktsa) – Thombushong (4100 m) via Tagalun Pass at 4550 m.

Walk uphill through rhododendron, Oak and birch forest and passing through Yak Herders’ camp.

In May and June, you can see Takins as this place is the migratory route of the Takins.

Distance 14 Km, Duration 5-6 hours, Difficulty level: Moderate. Highest Point: 4550 m,

Dinner and overnight in camp.

Day 8.Thombushong to Zankepang at 2600 m via Thombula pass (4300 m).

We climb to Thombula and then you walk on the ridge from where you can see the several mountain peaks like Jichu Drake (5980 m). Then the path descends steeply to the army camp and we reach the campsite.

Distance 18 Km, Duration 7-8 hours, Difficulty level: Moderate. Highest Point 4300 m.

Dinner and over night in camp.

Day 9.Zankepang to Drugyel Dzong (End of Jomolhari Base Camp Trek) – Thimphu:

This is the place where you see off your Trekking staffs and your horse men. Then walk to the road end for 2 hours only. (End of Trek) and drive to Thimphu (74 km).

After lunch, free to stroll in the town for shopping and photography.

Walking Distance: 7 km, 3 hours.

Dinner and over night in Hotel.

Day 10.Thimphu sightseeing:

In the Morning, visit to:

  • National Memorial Chorten (1974) built in honor of the Late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck.
  • Dupthop Lhakhang one of the few surviving nunneries in Bhutan.
  • National Library, stocked with ancient Buddhist manuscripts.
  • Painting School where traditional art is still kept alive through instructions in the art of painting Thangkas.

In the afternoon, visit Tallest Statue of Buddha in the world (51.5 m).

Then witness Archery Match at Changlimithang.

In the evening, visit Tashichho Dzong, seat of the national government and the Central Monastic Body.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 11.Thimphu – Punakha – Thimphu | 76 Km | 2 hours.

In the morning, drive to Punakha valley via Dochu La pass (3140 m). A short stop at the Dochu La pass to view Higher Himalayas.

Drive further to Punakha. On the way, visit Chimi Lhakhang built in 1499 by Lama Drukpa Kuenley, popularly known as “The Divine Madman”. The Temple is also known as “the Temple of Fertility”.

In the Afternoon, visit to Punakha Dzong built in 1637 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.

In the evening, drive back to Thimphu.

Dinner and overnight in Hotel.

Day 12.Thimphu – Paro (Departure):

After breakfast, drive to the airport and farewell.

Yes, Solo trekker for Jomolhari Base Camp Trek has to pay single supplement (F I T Surcharge) @ US $ 80 per night which can be paid along with the tour payment.

Can I do Jomolhari Base Camp Trek independently without a guide?

No, Back packers and independent travelers are not allowed in Bhutan so you cannot do Jomolhari Base Camp trek independently. You have to book Bhutan package trip with one of the registered Bhutan Tour Operators who will then process your trekking permit.
